Two Experts to Deliver ‘Bookend’ Keynote Addresses

BOWLING GREEN, KY—Two outstanding experts, one on biofuels and the other on food-borne illnesses, will open and close the Annual Meeting of the National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) in Sacramento at the Hyatt Regency, April 2-5.

“We are incredibly fortunate to have the Co-founder and Chairman of the Board of Pacific Ethanol, Inc., Bill Jones as the keynote speaker of our Opening General Session,” states Jim Fraley, chairman of the program planning committee.

The theme of this session is BioFuels Energy: Animal Agriculture at the Crossroads.  Jones’ address will be “Corn, Cattle, and Carbon Credits – A California Perspective.”

As in past years, the NIAA Annual Meeting will close with a special symposium themed Impacts of Animal Production Safety Practices on the Food Supply and the keynote address for that session will be delivered by Dr. Michael P. Doyle, Regents Professor and Director of the Center for Food Safety at the University of Georgia.  Dr. Doyle’s presentation will be "Food-borne Illnesses and Antibiotic Resistance Associated with Zoonotic Pathogens", according to Dr. Leonard Bull, symposium program planning chair.  Following the symposium a special tour is scheduled for the University of California – Davis Diagnostic Laboratory, more details forthcoming on the NIAA website.

Both of these speakers bring impressive credentials to the NIAA audience.  Jones is well known in his home state and in the biofuels industry.  Before starting the company he was elected California’s Secretary of State from 1994 to 2003.  Prior to that he had served in the legislature for 12 years.   He is a farmer, cattle rancher and a graduate of Fresno State University.

Dr. Doyle is an active researcher in the area of food safety and security and works closely with the food industry on issues related to the microbiological safety of foods.  He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received his B.S. degree in Bacteriology, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Food Microbiology.  He serves on food safety committees of many scientific organizations and has served as a scientific advisor to many groups, including the World Health Organization, the Institute of Medicine, the National Academy of Science-National Research Council, the International Life Sciences Institute-North America, the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

An updated schedule of events and speakers is listed on the NIAA website at www.animalagriculture.org.  “You can register for the meeting online via PayPal, fax or mail a registration form with check or credit card information to the NIAA office.  Or you can register onsite in Sacramento,” explains NIAA CEO Michele Vise-Brown.
