Caring For Animals Ms. Jodi Black
A new video and curriculum for teaching Quality Assurance and ethical decision making to junior livestock project members has been developed by OSU Extension with assistance from ABN Radio & TV and The Ohio Department of Agriculture. This curriculum has been incorporated into all Ohio 4-H livestock project books and the video is used to supplement those books. The program was developed to meet Ohio livestock industry needs of teaching youth industry standards and consumer expectations. 4-H livestock projects are some of the most popular projects in Ohio. Animals are fun to care for and the entire family can enjoy caring for them. But, what are the specific goals of the livestock project? Decision making, record keeping, goal setting, responsibility, cooperation, and sportsmanship are the focus areas that are addressed. Specifics such as withdrawal times, residues, ethical show and preparation practices, and other industry issues are discussed through role-playing and real life examples. The program is designed to lead a club through a process of developing project goals for the individual and family to explore why certain practices are or are not utilized.
