 Strengthening Ethical Component of the Livestock Program

 

Position Statement  

 

To maintain the integrity of the youth livestock program in youth development, in addition to improving the reputation of the overall livestock industry, while providing the highest quality livestock and animal products.



Desired Outcomes  

  • Development and dissemination of the National Livestock Show Code of Conduct.

  • Support and awards/recognition system that promotes character in youth.

  • Provide alternate educational sources to address issues related to youth livestock programs.

  • Include youth and youth organi­zation representation in the de­velopment of the National Live­stock Show Code of Conduct and the Livestock Show Ethics Council.
     

  • Develop grass-roots awareness of the potential consequences of NOT addressing ethical issues in livestock programs.

Action Items

  • Support development and dissemina­tion of the national Livestock Show Code of Conduct.

  • Develop and include youth represen­tation in the new Livestock Ethics Council.

  • Evaluate and modify existing awards/ recognition programs.

  • Establish a database of awards and recognition programs.

  • Identify and contact state breeding and commodity association groups for utili­zation of resources.

  • Explore ways to utilize existing ethical materials.

  • Develop a national information data­base to provide an array of educational resources.

  • Provide educational training program at the community/club level.
