Position Statement  

 

To articulate and disseminate a system of professional ethics accepted as a consensus in youth livestock programs. All youth livestock programs must be selected, designed, con ducted and regulated such that the fundamental goals of both public and youth education an development are supported.



Desired Outcomes

  • Emphasis should focus on competing, not winning.

  • Remove the primacy of money.

  • Integrate real world agriculture into the showring.

  • Increase involvement from the general public in all activities, and use these activities to educate.

  • Have a standing body to keep working on this issue and all aspects of this issue.



Action Items

  • Eliminate the avenue of support of Jackpot/ Futurity/Payback.

  • Scatter scholarships to all levels.

  • Change reward systems to non‑monetary ones.

  • Develop a means to expand the areas that youth are rewarded on, include events such as skillathons, team marketing, written exams, and knowledge bowls.

  • Identify where the showring's place is in the animal agriculture industry.

  • Press the breed associations to use more real world measurements.

  • Make an assertive effort to involve nonshowpeople in youth livestock programs.

  • Eliminate "turf‑battles" concerning who is responsible for taking action.

  • Develop a list of guidelines for judges.

  • Develop and maintain a database to include professional resources on all levels.

  • Establish a "Uniform Code of Conduct."

  • Establish a standing body to keep working on this issue.
