Position Statement  

 

The NYLPES supports the adoption of awards systems and standards that emphasize complete knowledge of the animal agriculture industry and development of life skills.



Desired Outcomes

  • Enhance consumer knowl­edge of animal agriculture.

  • Develop life skills.

  • Emphasize the natural ani­mal evaluation.

Action Items

  • Move the emphasis of shows to Skillathon type events, showmanship and herdmanship.

  • Include producers through the sharing of information from carcass evaluations for genetic improvement.

  • Convert auction buyers into supporters of educational programs.

  • Encourage research on identifying underlying causes of the problems.

  • Sharing of information on alternative award systems in use.

  • Seek to spread the current auction money over a wider area by using it for items such as a school "educational scholarships" rather than all cash to one individual.

  • Identify a way to use the system to increase knowledge of agriculture and encourage their use.

  • Highlight the youth that are "doing the right things," not just winners and champions.
